FAQs for Providers
How can I refer a patient to IV Solutions?
You can call us directly at 888-316-7410, and we’ll collect the necessary information to begin service. You can also fax the patient’s demographic sheet to 888-316-7413. If you choose to send a fax, we recommend a quick follow-up call to confirm we’ve received it.
Which pharmacy benefit manager (PBM) are you contracted with?
We’re currently contracted with all hospice-focused PBMs: Humana, Enclara, Dragonfly, Fuze, BetterRx, Wise Hospice Options, AvaCare, HospiceChoice Partners, and OnePoint Patient Care.
Will our PBM pay for everything that a hospice orders for their patient's home use?
Yes, our contracts with PBMs are all-inclusive. They cover the compounded medication, the pump, and all supplies needed for safe administration. The only exception is the cost associated with lost, destroyed, or unreturned equipment.
Do I need a contract to work with IV Solutions?
You won’t need to sign a new contract with us if you’re already working with one of our hospice PBMs. Instead, we’ll provide a memorandum of understanding that outlines our referral process and clarifies our respective responsibilities.
What therapies can IV Solutions provide to our hospice patients?
We offer a comprehensive range of infusion therapies for hospice providers, including:
- Pain management
- Inotropic medications (e.g., milrinone, dobutamine, dopamine)
- Palliative sedation
- Total parenteral nutrition (TPN)
- IV antibiotics
- Hydration
As long as the medication is infused, not pushed, we can provide it.
What is the average turnaround time to get my patient started on your service?
If an order is placed Monday through Friday before 2:30 pm EST, your patient will receive their medication and supplies the next day via overnight priority FedEx delivery. This means that your patient will receive deliveries Tuesday through Saturday (where available).
Will FedEx deliveries always arrive before 10:30 am local time?
Not necessarily. FedEx defines Priority Overnight based on the zip code where the delivery will be made. At many locations, the delivery will be 10:30 am or earlier, but other deliveries may arrive before 12:00 noon or 4:00 pm. IV Solutions has no control over FedEx-defined time zones.
What supplies are included in the initial delivery?
The first delivery includes everything a nurse needs to begin therapy:
- A pump that is preprogrammed according to the pharmacy’s orders
- Two medication cassettes (unless specified otherwise)
- All supplies necessary to infuse the medication, such as central dressing kits, Huber needles, end caps for PICC lines, alcohol swabs, saline, heparin, and subcutaneous needles
Essentially, we send everything required for a nurse to start the infusion.
What if special supplies are needed?
Clinicians simply need to request any special supplies, and we’ll make every effort to provide them. For instance, if a patient is allergic to Tegaderm, let us know, and we can send Primapore, OpSite, or IV3000 dressings instead. Conversely, if your patient has a surplus of certain supplies, please inform us so we can avoid sending unnecessary inventory.
How are pumps returned to IV Solutions?
When a patient no longer requires the pump, the on-site nurse will remove all IV Solutions equipment from the residence and bring it to the hospice office. We’ll then provide the office with a FedEx return label to ensure the equipment is safely returned to us. Please note that we cannot arrange for equipment returns directly from a patient’s home.
What makes IV Solutions different from other infusion companies?
With 38 years of dedicated service to hospice facilities, we understand what field nurses need to get their patients comfortable. We’re proud that our first hospice client in Delaware has remained with us since we started operations in 1988.
Why has IV Solutions expanded into so many states?
Over the past five years, we’ve found that many of our colleagues withdrew from the hospice community due to challenges such as company acquisitions, medication shortages, national backorders, and regulatory issues. We recognized that this created a critical gap, making it difficult for hospices to access essential pain medications for their patients.
In response, we’ve leaned into the hospice world even further. We invested in specialized equipment that allows us to compound medications from scratch, ensuring we never face shortages of critical drugs. Additionally, our on-site sterility, stability, and endotoxin testing equipment allow us to verify the quality of every product before it leaves our facility.
Which pain pumps does IV Solutions use, and is training provided for those who are unfamiliar with these?
We use the Cadd Prizm VIP 6101. While this is a slightly older model of Cadd pump, we find that most nurses are already familiar with it.
For those who aren’t, we offer several training options to suit your needs. Virtual training can be coordinated with your hospice’s weekly or monthly team meetings. We also provide on-demand video training through our website. For larger teams across multiple locations, we may be able to arrange for one of our staff members to conduct in-person training at your hospice.
How does IV Solutions handle on-call services?
We have NEVER and will NEVER use an answering service or automated call system. You’ll always connect with a pharmacist on the other end of the phone.
We understand that nurses in the field often face stressful situations and require immediate assistance. That’s why we always have a trained team member on call to provide answers, whether it’s for a simple reprogram, a cassette change, or a more technical question. We also have an on-call pharmacist, available 24 hours a day, equipped to resolve your issue right away.
